Aquaphone is a unique sound effects instrument that is widely used in cinematographic music, sound design and experimental creation. Its sound is reminiscent of whale songs, underwater echoes, and sci-fi sound effects that instantly create a mysterious atmosphere.
The instrument is made of a stainless steel body with bronze rods that generate an extremely wide and unpredictable sound. The sound is produced by friction (using smithy or flumies) or by tapping the rods very gently, or through the bottom, with grinders and hands. By tilting, rocking, or moving an instrument, water changes its resonance and timbre, creating ever-changing, lively sounds.
With its ultra-wide range of sounds, the Aquaphone has become a popular effects instrument in film soundtracks, contemporary orchestral music, and experimental projects. It is an instrument that is not so much “played” as it is explored.
